"No" The word came out barely above a whisper. But it felt louder than a gunshot. Silence. Complete silence. Enzo froze. His smile disappeared instantly. The world around him seemed to stop moving. For a moment he thought he had heard wrong. His mind refused to process the answer. No? She said no? The ring box suddenly felt unbearably heavy in his hand.
His heart dropped straight into his stomach. A sharp pain spread through his chest. As if someone had reached inside and ripped his heart out. Behind him, the entire family stood frozen. Rose's eyes widened. Sofia covered her mouth. Albert frowned in confusion. Even Donato looked shocked. Nobody had expected that answer.
Least of all Enzo. Because he had seen love in her eyes. He knew it was there. He had always known. His throat tightened painfully. Still kneeling, he forced himself to smile. A broken smile. One that looked more painful than tears. "Oh." The single word left his lips.
His eyes lowered to the ring. For a second, nobody spoke. Nobody knew what to say. Then Enzo nodded slowly. As if trying to convince himself to accept it. "Okay." His voice cracked. But he smiled again. Trying desperately not to break in front of her. "Okay, baby." A tear escaped despite his efforts. He quickly wiped it away.
"If that's what you want." His fingers tightened around the ring box. "So long as you're happy." The words nearly killed him. Because happiness was the only thing he had ever wanted for her. Even if it wasn't with him. Elena watched him.
And suddenly her heart shattered. Because she could see it. She could physically see the moment his world broke apart. The moment all the hope disappeared from his eyes. The moment the future he had imagined vanished. And yet He was still smiling for her. Still trying to make her comfortable. Still putting her feelings above his own. That hurt far more than anything else.
"No..." A sob escaped her lips. Enzo looked up immediately. Confusion flashing across his face. Elena shook her head frantically as tears poured down her cheeks. No, Enzo." Her voice broke. "That's not what I meant." The tiny spark of hope that had died inside him flickered again. He stared at her. Unable to understand. Elena pressed a trembling hand against her chest and took a shaky breath.
I-I want to do something first."
Enzo frowned. "What is it, baby?" Before she answered, she looked toward Donato. Then Albert. Then back at Enzo. The fear that had haunted her for weeks slowly disappeared from her eyes. In its place appeared something else. Strength The strength she had been raised with.
The strength of a Romano. "I want to face him." The garden fell silent. "I want to look him in the eye." A tear rolled down her cheek. "I want him to know that he didn't break me." Her voice grew firmer. "He thought he could destroy me." "He thought he could destroy our family." "He thought he could take everything from me."
Her jaw clenched. "But he failed." Everyone watched her in stunned silence. For the first time since the accident, Elena wasn't speaking like a victim. She was speaking like herself Like the Elena Romano they all knew. "I won't move forward with my life until I face him."
Her eyes hardened. "I want him to see that I'm still standing." The pride in Donato's eyes was impossible to miss.Albert smiled faintly. Even Rose looked emotional. There she was. Their Eli. Finally coming back.
Enzo stepped forward immediately and took her hand. His thumb brushed away a tear from her cheek. "Anything you want." His voice was gentle. "Just say it." Elena nodded. Then she whispered, "I want to see him dead."
Enzo looked toward Donato. Donato held his gaze for several seconds. Then slowly nodded. "Let's go." A few minutes later, the four of them left the garden. The family remained behind, watching silently. As Elena walked between her brothers and Enzo, she felt strangely calm.
Not because she wasn't scared. But because for the first time since that night She wasn't running anymore. She was facing it. Facing him. Facing the nightmare. Together. The walk toward the basement felt longer than usual.
The deeper they descended into the Romano estate, the quieter everything became. Eventually they reached a heavy steel door.
Two guards stood outside. Both immediately straightened. "Boss." Donato nodded. One of the guards unlocked the door. The moment it opened, a cold chill drifted into the hallway. The room was beyond dimly lit.
Silent. Oppressive. The kind of silence that made people uncomfortable. Elena's fingers tightened around Enzo's hand. Instantly, Enzo squeezed back. A silent reminder. I'm here.Always. She looked up at him. He smiled softly. And somehow that was enough.
Taking a deep breath, Elena stepped inside. At the far end of the room sat Nico. Chained to a chair. His condition was miserable.
His confidence is gone. His arrogance is gone. The man who had once smirked while manipulating her looked completely different now. Broken. Defeated.
The moment he heard footsteps, he slowly lifted his head. And froze. Because standing before him Was Elena Romano. Alive. Standing. Unbroken. For the first time since his capture, genuine fear appeared in his eyes. Not fear of Donato. Not fear of Albert. Not even fear of Enzo.
But fear of the woman he thought he had destroyed. Elena looked at him silently. No tears. No panic. No trembling. Just silence. Nico stared back. Unable to look away. Then Elena took one step forward. And another. Until she stood directly in front of him. Her eyes never left his.
For several long seconds, nobody spoke. Then finally Elena smiled. A small smile. But one filled with victory. "You lost." Nico's face went pale. And for the first time since that terrible night Elena felt the weight on her chest become just a little lighter.
____
Elena stood in front of Nico, her posture straight and unwavering. The fear that had once filled her eyes was gone. In its place stood something far more powerful strength. The strength of a Romano.
She looked directly into his eyes. "What was it that you said that day?" she asked quietly. Nico swallowed hard. Elena took another step closer. "You said you would destroy me." Her voice remained calm. "You said I would never be able to face my family again." A bitter smile appeared on her lips.
"You said I would be ashamed to even look at my own reflection." Her eyes hardened. "Look at me now, Nico." The room fell silent. Elena slowly spread her arms. "I'm standing here." She looked over her shoulder toward her brothers. "With my family." Then she looked back at him. "Unbroken." Nico's jaw tightened. For the first time, he couldn't find a single word to say.
Elena continued. "And what else did you say?" Her smile widened. "Oh yes." "You said no man would ever want me after this." The next moment she walked directly toward Enzo. Without hesitation, she slipped her hand into his. The contact stole the breath from his lungs. His fingers immediately closed around hers. Like he never intended to let go again.
Elena lifted their joined hands for Nico to see. "Look carefully." Tears filled Enzo's eyes. But he couldn't stop smiling. "My man is standing right here." Her voice echoed proudly through the basement. "Holding my hand." "Protecting me." "Loving me." A tear rolled down her cheek. "More than anyone ever could." Enzo's throat tightened painfully.
Meanwhile, Nico's expression slowly crumbled. His confidence. His arrogance. His belief that he had won. Everything disappeared. Elena saw it. And smiled. Then she took another step toward him. "You said I would beg for death." A laugh escaped her lips. A genuine laugh. One filled with victory. "The game changed, Mr. Nico." She tilted her head slightly. "Now you're the one begging for death."
Her gaze traveled over his broken condition. The chains. The bruises. The blood. The fear. "I'm sure you've already done plenty of begging." The smile disappeared from her face. "You lost." Then she turned toward Donato. Her expression became serious. "Brother." Donato immediately met her gaze. "I want to see him die."
The room fell silent. "I want to watch it with my own eyes." For several seconds, nobody moved. Then Donato slowly reached for the gun at his waist. Nico's face turned pale. He thought his end had come. That Donato Romano would finally pull the trigger. But instead-Donato walked toward Elena. And placed the weapon in her hand.
A smirk appeared on his face. "Then do the honor yourself, Princess." Elena stared at the gun. Then at Donato. Then Albert. Then Enzo. Albert smiled proudly. Enzo simply nodded. A silent message. Whatever you choose, I'm with you. Always. Slowly, Elena wrapped her fingers around the weapon. She turned back toward Nico.
The realization finally hit him. His eyes widened in terror. Not because he was about to die. But because he was about to die by the hands of the girl he thought he had broken. The same girl he had underestimated. The same girl he had mocked. The same girl standing before him stronger than ever. Elena raised the gun. Her hands were steady. Her eyes locked onto his.
Nico opened his mouth. Perhaps to beg. Perhaps to apologize. Perhaps to save himself. But Elena didn't want to hear it. She had heard enough lies from him. Enough manipulation. Enough cruelty. Enough pain. Her finger tightened on the trigger. The shot echoed through the basement. Everything seemed to stop. For a second. Then another.
Nico's body went still. The fear disappeared from his eyes. The nightmare was over. The silence that followed felt strangely peaceful. Elena continued staring ahead. The gun slipped from her trembling fingers. It hit the floor with a metallic clatter. Suddenly her legs weakened. Immediately Donato and Albert stepped beside her. Supporting her before she could fall.
Elena looked at them. At her brothers. The men who had stood beside her through everything. A small smile appeared on her lips. Then her eyes searched the room. Until they found Enzo. He was standing there with tears running freely down his face. And smiling. Not because of revenge. Not because Nico was gone. But because Elena was finally free. Free from fear. Free from guilt. Free from the nightmare.
Elena slowly walked toward him. Neither of them said a word. They simply looked at each other. Then Elena extended her left hand toward him. Enzo blinked. Confused. She gently lifted her ring finger. The realization hit him instantly. His breath caught. His heart nearly stopped. With shaking hands, he reached into his pocket. The ring. The same ring he had carried for months. The same ring she had not answered before. Carefully, he slid it onto her finger.
The diamond sparkled beneath the dim basement lights. Neither of them looked away. Then Elena smiled. A real smile. The brightest smile he had seen since before the accident. And finally she gave him her answer. "To your question..." Her voice trembled. "Yes." Fresh tears spilled down Enzo's cheeks. Elena laughed softly through her own tears. "Yes, Enzo." She stepped closer. "I will marry you." "Gladly."
For a moment Enzo simply stared at her. Unable to believe what he had heard. Then he laughed. A broken, relieved laugh. The kind that comes after surviving hell. Behind them, Donato and Albert burst into laughter at his stunned expression. But Enzo didn't care. The world had disappeared again. There was only Elena. His Elena.
The woman he had loved for years. The woman standing in front of him wearing his ring. Elena wrapped her arms around his neck. And Enzo immediately pulled her into his embrace. Holding her tightly. As if letting go was no longer an option. For the first time in weeks- Both of them finally felt at peace.
____
The moment they stepped inside the Romano mansion, Elena stopped. The familiar warmth of home hit her all at once. For weeks she had been fighting. Fighting fear. Fighting pain. Fighting memories. Fighting herself. And now, standing inside the place where she had always felt safest, something inside her finally broke. Her eyes immediately found her mother.
"Mama..."
Her voice cracked. Before anyone could react, Elena rushed forward and threw herself into Aravi's arms. The second her mother's arms wrapped around her, the wall she had spent weeks building completely shattered. A broken sob escaped her lips. Then another. And another. Soon she was crying uncontrollably. The kind of crying that came from carrying too much pain for too long.
"I-I'm sorry..." She buried her face into her mother's shoulder. "I-I'm so sorry, Mama." Her entire body trembled. "I disappointed you." Fresh tears streamed down her face. "I didn't listen to Brother." "I lied." "I caused everyone so much pain." Her voice broke completely. "I'm sorry..."
Aravi's own eyes filled with tears immediately. She held her daughter tighter. As if trying to protect her from every bad thing in the world. "No." Her voice was firm. "No, baby." She cupped Elena's face and forced her to look at her. "You did not disappoint me." Elena cried harder. Aravi wiped away her tears lovingly. "You hear me?" Her voice trembled. "You are my brave girl." "My pride." "My strongest child."
Elena stared at her mother through blurred vision. Aravi kissed her forehead. "The thing you did today proves exactly why I'm proud of you." A tear rolled down Aravi's cheek. "You refused to let evil define you." "You refused to let another person destroy your life." "You stood up for yourself." Her eyes shone with pride. "You survived." "And then you fought back." Aravi smiled through tears. "That is my daughter."
Elena broke down all over again. She hugged her mother tightly. Like a lost child who had finally found her way home. And for the first time in weeks-She allowed herself to feel safe. The family quietly watched the emotional reunion. Many of them wiping away tears. Then suddenly Aravi froze. Her eyes dropped to Elena's hand.
Specifically-To the ring. For a second she simply stared. Then her eyes widened. "Oh." She grabbed Elena's hand. "Oh my baby." The entire room immediately looked over. Aravi stared dramatically at the diamond ring. "When did you become this big?"
Elena instantly blushed. The family burst into laughter."No." Aravi shook her head dramatically. "No, no, no." She pointed at the ring. "You're practically engaged."Another round of laughter echoed through the room. Aravi immediately turned toward Enzo. "I wasn't ready for this."
She clutched Elena protectively. "I refuse." Everyone laughed harder. "I will talk to Lili tomorrow." She nodded firmly to herself. "And will make enzo permanently move into this mansion after the marrage."
Enzo blinked. "What?"
Aravi ignored him. "That way my Eli never leaves me." Elena finally laughed. An actual laugh. Soft. Shy. Beautiful. The sound made everyone's heart lighter. "There." Rose pointed dramatically. She laughed." Everyone smiled instantly.
Nonna walked forward and wrapped Elena in a warm embrace. "My beautiful girl." She kissed her forehead. "Congratulations." Elena smiled through tears. Then came Sofia. Then Rose. Then Kavya. Then Kiara. Each one hugging her. Congratulating her. Teasing her. "You finally got your man." Rose announced loudly.
The entire room laughed. Sofia nodded enthusiastically. "He has been obsessed for years."
"SOFIA!" Enzo shouted from across the room.
Everyone laughed even harder. Kavya grinned. "The way he looks at you is honestly embarrassing." Kiara nodded immediately. "Painfully embarrassing." Elena's cheeks turned bright red. Meanwhile-The target of all those accusations stood quietly near the back. Watching her. Only her.
Enzo didn't care that the entire Romano family was present. He didn't care that her mother, father, brothers, grandmother, sisters-in-law's , and practically everyone important in his life were standing there. He didn't care about anything. His entire world was sitting in the middle of that room. Laughing. Smiling. Alive.
The smile on Elena's face felt more precious than anything he had ever owned. More valuable than money. More valuable than power. More valuable than life itself. A week ago he had been holding her bloody body in his arms, begging her not to leave him. Today she was standing in front of him wearing his ring. Smiling. Laughing. Breathing. Living.
And Enzo knew one thing with absolute certainty. If this was what happiness looked like- He would spend the rest of his life protecting it. Protecting her. Loving her. And making sure that smile never disappeared again.
____
Three days passed quietly. For the first time in weeks, the Romano mansion no longer felt suffocating. Elena was healing. Slowly. Some days were better than others. She still had nightmares. She still went silent sometimes. But she smiled more now. She laughed occasionally. And whenever she laughed, the entire family secretly celebrated it.
Because every smile meant they were getting their Elena back. Kiara spent most of her time with her. She took Elena shopping. Made her watch movies. Dragged her into family game nights. Did everything she could to keep her mind occupied. But while she was busy helping Elena heal, there was something else she had started noticing.
Something she had ignored at first. Something that now refused to leave her mind. Rose. At first, Kiara told herself she was overthinking. After all, everyone had been worried about Elena. Everyone had spent extra time together. That was normal. Right? But the more she paid attention, the more uncomfortable she became.
It had started around the third day after the accident. Whenever Donato went to the hospital- Rose somehow ended up going too. At first Kiara hadn't thought much about it. Rose loved Elena. Of course she would want to visit. But then it became every day. Every single day. If Donato was going- Rose was already there. If Donato stayed-Rose stayed too.
If Donato skipped meals-Rose appeared with food. If Donato looked exhausted- Rose was beside him. Always. Constantly. Like a shadow. Kiara remembered one particular night vividly. everyone had been exhausted. The waiting area was quiet. Donato had finally sat down after hours of standing outside Elena's room. A few minutes later, Rose had fallen asleep on his shoulder. Donato hadn't even reacted. Hadn't noticed. Hadn't pushed her away. Nothing.
And that was exactly what bothered Kiara. Because Donato wasn't paying attention. His entire focus was on Elena. He wasn't noticing these things. But Kiara was. At the time she had forced herself to ignore it. This wasn't the moment. Donato was already carrying enough pressure. His sister was fighting trauma. The family was falling apart. The last thing he needed was his wife starting an argument.
So she stayed silent. Swallowed her feelings. Ignored the discomfort. But today...Today was different. Today she had gone to the office for the first time in weeks. And what she learned there made her blood boil. Kiara was reviewing documents when one of the employees casually mentioned something.
"Ma'am, should I put these files in Mr. Romano's office? Miss Rose usually takes them in." Kiara frowned. "Usually?" The employee blinked. "Yes." Kiara's stomach tightened. The woman smiled innocently. "Miss Rose comes every day." Every day. The words echoed inside Kiara's head. "What do you mean every day?"
The employee seemed confused by the question. "She spends hours in Mr. Romano's office." Kiara froze. Hours. The employee continued talking completely unaware of the damage being done. "Everyone knows that." The file in Kiara's hand tightened. Her knuckles turned white.
"She usually arrives around lunch." "Sometimes earlier." "Sometimes she leaves with him too." The employee kept talking. But Kiara wasn't listening anymore. Her heartbeat was becoming louder. Because suddenly dozens of memories started connecting together. Whenever Donato came home recently...Rose was there.
Whenever Donato left...Rose was there. Whenever Donato was busy... Rose was somehow beside him. Again. And again. And again. Kiara sat silently in her chair. Her jaw clenched. A dangerous feeling settled in her chest. Not sadness. Not fear. Jealousy. Pure jealousy. And she hated it. Because she trusted Donato.
With her entire heart. She knew her husband. She never doubted on him. Not even for a second. But Rose...Rose was different. Rose had always been attached to Donato. Always a little too comfortable. A little too close. And now that everyone had been distracted by Elena's recovery...Rose had slipped right back into old habits.
Kiara slowly leaned back in her chair. Her eyes narrowed. The employee had long since left. But she remained frozen. Thinking. Remembering. Analyzing. And the more she thought about it-The more annoyed she became. A bitter laugh escaped her lips. "So that's why."
She finally understood why her instincts had been bothering her all week. Why she kept feeling uncomfortable every time she saw Rose standing next to Donato. Why she hated seeing Rose ride home with him. Why she hated seeing Rose bringing him food. Why she hated seeing Rose acting like she belonged beside him.
Kiara looked out the office window. A dangerous calm settled over her. The kind of calm that usually appeared before a storm. She trusted her husband completely. But that didn't mean she was blind. And if Rose had started forgetting boundaries again...
Then perhaps it was time someone reminded her exactly who Mrs. Romano was. And for the first time that day- Kiara smiled. It wasn't a happy smile. It was the smile of a woman who had finally noticed something she could no longer ignore.
______
The evening sun painted the city in shades of gold and orange. From the floor-to-ceiling glass window of her office, Kiara stood silently, watching the parking lot below. Her eyes narrowed. There. A familiar white car pulled into the Romano headquarters. Rose. Right on time.
Kiara crossed her arms. For the past week she had been observing. Watching. Noticing things everyone else seemed blind to. And today she was done observing. Today she wanted answers. She watched Rose step out of the car. Confident. Beautiful. Carrying several files against her chest.
The younger woman hurried toward the building entrance without hesitation. As if she had done this hundreds of times before. Kiara's lips curved into a cold smile. "Perfect." Without another word she left her office. A few minutes later she entered Donato's office.
The room smelled exactly like him. His expensive cologne. Coffee. Leather. Power. Kiara walked around the large desk and sat in his chair. She slowly spun around once. Then twice. Before finally stopping with her back facing the door. She checked the time. Donato was still stuck in a meeting.
Which meant Rose would arrive first. Exactly as planned. Several minutes passed. Then The office door opened. Rose entered without knocking. She looked exhausted. Distracted. Already speaking before fully entering. "Don, I heard you weren't in your office this morning, so I came directly She placed a thick file on the desk. "I'm actually struggling with this client and She sighed.
"Your guidance has helped me so much these past weeks, but this time I really messed up and---"Rose froze. The chair slowly turned. And instead of Donato She found Kiara sitting there. Watching her. Smiling. A smile that wasn't friendly. Rose's stomach dropped. For the first time all evening, she looked uncomfortable.
"Kiara." Her voice came out slightly strained. "You are here."
Kiara leaned back comfortably. "Yes." A pause. "I am here why can't i?."
Rose forced a smile. "I mean... of course you are." She laughed awkwardly. "This is your husband's office after all."
Kiara's eyes sharpened instantly. "Exactly."
"He is." Kiara stood slowly. "My husband." The room became very quiet. Rose shifted uncomfortably. Kiara walked around the desk. Every step calm. Controlled. Dangerously controlled. Until she stopped directly in front of Rose. Then she smiled.
A smile that made Rose nervous. "Tell me something."
Rose swallowed. "What?"
Kiara tilted her head. "What exactly is my husband to you?"
Rose frowned. "What kind of question is that?"
"A simple one." Kiara folded her arms. "So answer it."
Rose released a nervous laugh. "Donato is my best friend."
"Really?" Kiara asked quietly.
Rose nodded. "Of course."
Kiara smiled again. "Then stay his best friend." Rose's expression stiffened. Kiara stepped closer. "And stop trying to become something more." The smile disappeared from Rose's face. The air between them instantly changed. Rose looked away first. Kiara noticed.
And that alone told her enough. For several seconds neither woman spoke. Then Rose sighed. "What exactly are you accusing me of?"
Kiara laughed. A short laugh. Without humor. "Oh please." She shook her head. "Don't insult my intelligence." Rose's jaw tightened. Kiara continued. "You follow him everywhere." "You sit in his office for hours." "You go to the hospital with him." "You bring him food." "You come home with him." Her eyes narrowed. "And somehow I am supposed to believe all of that is because of some so called-freindship?"
Rose remained silent. Kiara took another step forward. "You know what bothers me most?" Rose looked at her. Kiara's voice dropped. "The fact that you think I wouldn't notice." The words hit harder than Rose expected. For the first time she looked genuinely uncomfortable. Kiara continued calmly. "You forgot one thing."
"What?" Rose asked quietly.
Kiara's eyes hardened. "I am his wife." HE. IS. A MARRIED. MAN . NOW. The silence that followed was suffocating. Rose looked away. Again. And again Kiara noticed it. A guilty person never holds eye contact for long. "Look at me." Kiara ordered.
Rose slowly lifted her head. Kiara held her gaze. Then asked the question she had wanted to ask for days. "Do you have feelings for him?" Rose froze. Complete silence. Neither woman moved. Neither woman blinked. Several seconds passed. Then Rose laughed. A forced laugh. "You are being ridiculous."
Kiara didn't react. "Do you love him?" She asked again. This time slower. Rose's smile disappeared. Kiara already knew. She could see it. The hesitation. The guilt. The anger. The longing. Everything. "Answer me."
Rose finally exploded. "Why does it matter?" Kiara's expression darkened. And there it was. The answer. Rose immediately realized her mistake. But it was too late. Kiara had heard it. Seen it. Understood it. The office suddenly felt much smaller. Rose looked away. Then laughed bitterly. "You want the truth?" Kiara nodded.
"Fine." Rose dropped the file onto the desk. The sound echoed through the room. "Yes." The word came out quietly. Painfully. "Yes, I love him." Kiara's jaw clenched. Rose continued before she could stop herself. "I've loved him for years." Years. The confession echoed through the office. Rose laughed again. This time sadly. "But I was too late."
Her eyes became glassy. "Happy now?" Kiara remained silent. Rose shook her head. "When I finally realized it..."A broken smile appeared on her face. "He was already married with you." The words carried years of pain. Years of regret. Years of what-ifs. Kiara listened quietly. Rose looked toward the window. "I know he doesn't love me that way."
She whispered. "I know he never will." Her voice cracked slightly. "But feelings don't disappear because they're inconvenient." The room fell silent. For the first time, Kiara saw something she hadn't expected. Not a villain. Not a schemer. Just a woman who had fallen in love too late. But that sympathy lasted only a moment.
Because Rose had still crossed boundaries. Kiara stepped closer. Her voice calm. Firm. Final. "Then let me make something clear." Rose looked at her. Kiara's eyes never left hers. The office had become unbearably quiet. Neither woman moved. Neither looked away. The tension between them felt so thick that it was difficult to breathe.
Kiara stood in front of Rose, her arms crossed tightly against her chest. Rose remained beside the desk, trying to maintain her composure despite the storm brewing inside her. For a few seconds, neither spoke. Then Kiara took a slow step forward. Her voice was low. Almost a whisper. But somehow it felt more dangerous than shouting.
"You loved him enough." Rose looked at her. Kiara's eyes were hard. Unforgiving. "Now stop."
Rose's jaw tightened. "What?"
"Whatever is going on inside your heart." Kiara's voice trembled slightly. Not from fear. From anger. "End it."
A bitter laugh escaped Rose's lips. She shook her head. "It's not that easy, Kiara."
The response snapped whatever patience Kiara still had left. "I don't care!" Her voice exploded through the office. Rose visibly flinched. "I don't fucking care if it's easy or not." The sharp possessiveness in her voice filled the room. For a moment even Kiara herself was surprised by the intensity of her emotions. But she didn't stop.
Because for the first time she was saying exactly what she had been feeling. For weeks. For months. Maybe even longer. "I can't tolerate it." Her voice shook. "The thought." Rose stared at her silently. Kiara pointed toward her. "The thought that another woman is thinking about my husband." Every word came out sharper than the last. "That another woman is loving him."
Her chest rose and fell rapidly. "Looking at him." "Thinking about him." "Wishing for him." The possessiveness in her voice was impossible to hide now. The office suddenly felt much smaller. Rose swallowed. Kiara stepped even closer. "He is mine." The words came out fiercely. "Only mine." Rose's eyes widened slightly. "No one gets to look at him the way I do."
Kiara's voice dropped lower. More dangerous. "No one gets to think about him the way I do." The intensity behind those words made Rose freeze. Because she realized this wasn't insecurity. This wasn't jealousy alone. This was love. Raw. Protective. Possessive. The kind of love that refused to share.
Rose forced herself to remain calm. "You are married to him." She nodded. "I know that." Then her eyes hardened. "But that doesn't mean you control who loves him." Kiara stared at her. Rose continued. "You can't stop people from having feelings." Her voice became stronger. "Just because he is your husband doesn't mean nobody else is allowed to love him."
Kiara laughed. A humorless laugh. The kind that sends chills down your spine. "I don't care." The words were immediate. Firm. Absolute. Rose blinked. Kiara didn't hesitate. "I have my husband all to myself." Her eyes burned with certainty. "And I don't entertain the thought that another woman is in love with him."
The silence that followed was deafening. Rose folded her arms. Trying to regain some control over the conversation. "Don't be obsessive, Kiara." She rolled her eyes. "I didn't steal your husband." "I never tried to." Her voice softened slightly. "I just love him from afar."
And somehow That made Kiara even angrier. Because Rose said it so casually. As if it wasn't a problem. As if it was harmless. As if loving another woman's husband was something Kiara should simply accept. Kiara stepped closer again. Close enough that Rose could clearly see the warning in her eyes. "And that's enough reason for me."
Rose frowned. "For what?"
Kiara's voice dropped into a whisper. The kind that carried far more threat than a scream ever could. "To make you stay away from him." Rose froze. Then Kiara added quietly "If necessary..." She paused. "And I mean absolutely necessary..." Her eyes never left Rose's. "I'll end your friendship with him." The words hit like a slap.
Rose's eyes widened instantly. "What?" For the first time genuine shock appeared on her face. "Are you insane?" She stared at Kiara in disbelief. "He is my best friend." Her voice rose. "Before he even knew you existed." She pointed toward herself. "I have known him for years." The frustration finally broke through.
"And you're standing here telling me you'll end our friendship?" Rose laughed incredulously. The sound carried both anger and disbelief."Unbelievable." She shook her head repeatedly. "Honestly, Kiara." "I thought you were sweet." A mocking smile appeared on her face. "But now i can see" She laughed again. "You are such a bitch."
The insult hung in the air. Heavy. Sharp. Dangerous. But surprisingly Kiara didn't react. She didn't get angry. Didn't shout. Didn't argue. Instead she took a deep breath. And smiled. A calm smile. A terrifying smile. The kind that made Rose suddenly wish she hadn't said anything. "You don't need to worry about which side of me my husband knows."
Kiara spoke softly. Every word perfectly controlled. "What matters is that you understand what I'm saying." The office suddenly felt colder. Rose remained silent. Kiara took one final step forward. Close enough that only Rose could hear her next words. "Listen carefully now ."
Her voice was ice. "STAY. AWAY. FROM. MY. HUSBAND."
Rose felt a chill run down her spine. For the first time since entering the office She felt uneasy. Truly uneasy. Because Kiara wasn't shouting anymore. Wasn't arguing. Wasn't defending herself. She was warning her. And somehow That was far more frightening.
"Otherwise..." Kiara's eyes locked onto hers. The smile disappeared completely. " things won't end well." Silence filled the office. Neither woman looked away. Neither moved. For the first time since the conversation began Rose found herself unable to think of a comeback.
Because something in Kiara's eyes told her one thing very clearly. This wasn't a wife feeling threatened. This was a wife protecting what belonged to her. And Rose suddenly realized just how dangerous that could be.
